The store I chose to go into was Hot Topic. I felt a bit out of place as soon as I went in because this store caters mostly to younger high school kids that are into metal music and like to dress in all black. I, of course, walked in with blue jeans and a cubs shirt on. The employees were dressed in alot of black, and one had a mohawk and a lip ring. Although normal people may be put off my this, I am sure that the targeted market finds more comfort in dealing with employees like this than they would shippin in an Old Navy.

I thought the video gave us a very interesting look at the challenges that those of us that are going into the industry can look forward to facing. Although Time Square is an exaggerated look at the clutter that the advertising industry is creating, it still does serve as a great example of clutter that is out of control.

I thought the part that explored the fact that consumers are looking for an identity in a brand was very interesting. It surprised me that when this all started with Saturn, it was the Saturn owners that started it. But Saturn was still smart enough to see it and take advantage of it. This kind of reminds me of skate and surf brands in California. You never see regular commercials for these brands, but they are still well know because pros are paid to wear them. And of course, kids want to be like the pros, so they buy them. And if you are seen wearing these clothes and shoes, you are seen as part of the skating community.

The common elements in the video was the trend of going after consumers emotions. My example about skaters goes after the desire to be accepted. One of the keys to making a good advertising campain is to target a major emotion in the target demographic and then exploit it.

It is really hard to see how far advertising will go. The current trend of trying to break into and become part of pop culture seems to be the most effective technique. I think that this trend will stick around for a long time until someone thinks of the next big thing.

The Product is Guiness beer.

5 things that come to mind when I think of Guiness are Beer, Irish, Thick, Drunk, and Filling.

The main thing that shaped my perception of Guiness is all of my friends. They are all Irish so I just developed a taste for it just by drinking it so often.

The top ten tags on Brandtags.net are, Beer, Irish, Dark, Ireland, Stout, Thick, Black, Dark, Delicious, and Drunk.

I believe my perception of this brand is the same as almost everyone who knows it. It is widely known and always associated with the Irish.

(Blogger would not let me post the embedded link because it was too long)

This is a commercial for Coors Light that is very popular during the football season. This is my favorite commercial because I am a very big football fan. All of the Coors commercials make me laugh, but I like this one the most. Comedy, however, is not the only reason that this commercial is so appealing. Most of them are based off of fairly famous post game head coach interviews. This one is from a game in 2006 where the Bears came back and upset the Cardinals. Most football fans, and just about every bears fan remembers the original context and that makes the commercial that much more appealing in Chicago. This ad actually did make me buy Coors the first time i saw it. I remember going out during half time after I first saw it to buy a case of Coors Light.

Goals For This Semester

My main goal for this year is to get at least 3 A's. I am a transfer and I really want to apply myself and do better than I did in previous years. I am really trying to get my GPA back up to a 3 so I have a better chance at an internship the summer before my senior year.
